The Tasmanian Seniors Card Program is part of a State Government initiative, jointly supported by private enterprise. It is not asset-tested. There are over 120 000 registered Seniors Card holders in Tasmania. More than 600 Tasmanians businesses participate in the Program and offer a diverse range of discounts on products and services to Tasmanian Seniors Card holders. This free card program is part of an Australia-wide scheme.

FAQs for Seniors Card holders

How do I get a self-service Seniors Card account?

If you applied online via the new Seniors Card system your online account was set up automatically. When your email is added into the system you will be sent an email to set your password and activate your Self-service online account.

If you are an existing Seniors Card holder without an online account, you can activate your account here.

Once a new Seniors Card has been requested, please wait up to 28 days for your card to arrive. If you have provided an email address you will receive a digital copy of the Seniors Card once successfully approved. This can be used immediately. You can also use a receipt from Service Tasmania or a photo image of it, until you receive your card.

If you do not have an email address you will need to go into a Service Tasmania Shop or apply by application form from the Seniors Card website

Can I use my mobile phone or tablet to fill out an application form?

Yes, the online version should work on most mobile phones and web browsers.

If I already have a Seniors Card do I need to create an online account?

We recommend you create a Seniors Card online account so you can update your details, order a replacement card, deactivate a card and search the Seniors Card Discount Directory for the latest discounts and benefits.

What will I need to apply?

To be eligible for the free lifelong Tasmanian Seniors Card you need to:

  • be 60 years of age or over
  • reside in Tasmania
  • work less than 20 hours per week.

Before you apply, you will need to have the following:

  • an email address to create your online account (you will also receive important information about your card via email)
  • your Tasmanian driver licence, or original documents of your Tasmanian residential address and date of birth.

You can:

  • apply online
  • apply in person at a Service Tasmania Shop (a staff member will need to view your proof of identity).

Can I apply on behalf of a family member or close friend who does not have an email address?

Using your email address, you must complete the form with all the details of the person you are applying on behalf of, including their proof of identity.

Will I automatically receive a Seniors Card when I turn 60?

No. You can apply for the Seniors Card when you turn 60 and meet the eligibility criteria.

How do I use my Seniors Card?

The Seniors Card is supported by over 600 Tasmanian businesses that offer access to savings on a range of goods and services. A list of businesses and services who offer discounts can be found in the Seniors Card Discount Directory. The latest information is also available on the Seniors Card Facebook page.

To keep up to date with offers:

  • Regularly review the Seniors Card directory online for up to date offers and discounts. You can search by product or area.
  • Look for the Seniors Card welcome here sign, which is displayed by participating businesses.
  • Always present your Seniors Card at the time of booking or making a purchase. Businesses do not have to honour discounts after a transaction has occurred.
  • When making a booking on the phone have your Seniors Card handy to quote the number.
Can I use my Seniors Card interstate or overseas?

The Seniors Card Program operates in each state and territory, and most businesses involved Australia-wide have agreed to offer their discounts to Seniors Card holders from Tasmania. However, it is best to ask the interstate businesses if they provide a discount to Tasmanian Seniors Card holders before making a purchase.

If you phone, write or email the Seniors Card office before travelling to that state or territory, they will send you a copy of their directory.

Can I use my Seniors Card in New Zealand?

Thanks to an agreement with the New Zealand Government, you can also use your card in New Zealand to access discounts from participating New Zealand SuperGold businesses.

This is the New Zealand equivalent of the Tasmanian Seniors Card program.

Details of Participating Businesses that accept Tasmanian Card holders are available on the New Zealand SuperGold website, or by calling 0800 25 45 65 when in New Zealand.

Note: The agreement does not extend to Seniors public transport concessions in either country.

How do I update my details or order a replacement card?

You can create an online self-service account at www.seniors.tas.gov.au. If you already have an account you can login to your account and update your details and order a replacement card if required.

Replacement Cards and change of details can also be requested by calling Service Tasmania on 1300 135 513.

If I forget to carry my card, can I still get a discount?

You can use a digital image of your card if it clearly shows the card number. You can take a photograph on your smartphone of your Seniors Card from either your online Seniors Card account or the card itself. Save the photograph in your phone's photos storage to show to participating businesses/services.

What sort of discount do I have to give?

The Seniors Card Program accepts a minimum 10% discount or equivalent. It is preferred that the offer be available every trading day without restrictions to minimise confusion for Seniors Card holders and for consistency of the Program. How can I let customers know that I offer a Seniors Card discount?

Once your application to join the Seniors Card Program has been approved you will receive Seniors Card promotional material with your welcome pack which can be displayed at your business premises.

Free promotional materials can also be ordered online from your Business Partner Account.

How do I change details for my business such as the name or location?

You can update the details of your business via your Business Partner Account.

What businesses are eligible?

Business Partners must have a valid ABN. They may be:

  • Situated anywhere in Tasmania
  • National businesses with Tasmanian outlets or
  • Online or mail order businesses anywhere in Australia.

Businesses have the choice to offer their discounts to interstate Seniors Card holders and New Zealand SuperGold Card holders.

What are the benefits to joining as a Business Partner?

Joining the Tasmanian Seniors Card Program is free and there are no ongoing costs or fees attached to membership.

Each State and Territory government manages its own Seniors Card Program. In Tasmania, there are over 120 000 Seniors Card holders and more than 7 million Australia-wide, providing a unique opportunity to market your product directly to a diverse and rapidly growing seniors market.

With thousands more baby boomers turning 60 over the next few years, the number of Tasmanian Seniors Card holders will increase dramatically.

Nationally, people aged 60 years and over represent around 20 per cent of the population and this is projected to grow to between 27 per cent and 30 percent by 2051.

As of June 2017, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that 19.3 per cent of the Tasmanian population were over 65 years of age. This equates to 100,688 people.

The Seniors Card Program is open to any business that wants to attract this market segment.

How do I promote my Business Partnership with the Tasmanian Seniors Card Program?

Offering a seniors discount is a welcoming gesture and makes seniors feel like valued customers.

To promote your business, you can:

  • Ensure staff know what your offer is for Seniors Card holders and can answer questions about this offer.
  • Display your Seniors Card window stickers and Counter Stand. Card holders look out for them.
  • Use the Seniors Card Welcome Here logo in your marketing collateral and advertising.
  • Promote your offer to over 120 000 Seniors Card holders through the Discount Directory.
What are the Participating Business Agreement conditions for the Program?

The following agreement is made between Seniors Card Participating Businesses and the Seniors Card Program when they become a registered Participating Business:

The Seniors Card Program ("Program") is administered by Communities, Sport and Recreation, a Division of the Tasmanian Government ("the Crown") Department of Communities Tasmania.

Businesses registered with the Program agree to provide discounts to Seniors Card holders ("Customers").

It is agreed that the Business wishes to register with the Program to provide either or both products and services to Customers for the Discount (as defined in clause 1).

In consideration for the Crown agreeing to allow the Business to register and participate in the Program, the Business agrees to sell either or both, products and services to Customers subject to the Discount and subject to the following terms and conditions of this Agreement:

it must provide either:

  • a discount;
  • of 10% or more; or
  • a discount which equates to $20 or more, which dollar value discount must equate in value to a discount of 10% or more off the normal price of the offered products or services; or
  • subject to the prior approval of the Department, entirely at the Department's discretion, a discount of less than 10% off the normal price of the offered products or services;
  • it must ensure that it specifies a 'percentage' or 'dollar value' Discount. Wording such as 'varying levels of discount', 'up to X%', 'approximately X%' or 'X% to X%' are not acceptable and must not be used;
  • unless otherwise agreed by the Department, entirely at the Department's discretion, it must provide a Discount offer for a minimum of 24 months from the date of commencement of its participation in the Program with provision to re-negotiate the Discount offered after that time;
  • it must clearly display Seniors Card promotional material in all its business shopfronts;
  • it must ensure the Discount is readily available to Customers nominated in the relevant offer and that all of its staff are made aware of the existence and terms of the Discount;
  • the Discount offered must not be changed or substituted without the prior written consent of the Department, entirely at the Department's discretion;
  • it fully indemnifies the Crown against any cost (including legal fees), claims, damages and expenses that may be incurred by the Crown arising from, or attributable to, any, or all of, the Business;
  • failing to perform its obligations under this Agreement; or
  • in connection with the supply of any, or all of, the products or services or the Discount offered to a Customer; or
  • any failure to supply any, or all of, the products or services or the Discount to a customer;
  • that the Department may make enquiries with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, and other authorities, regarding the Business' trade activities and any other matters relevant to the Business' participation in the Program;
  • that the Business' registration with the Program ceases when the Discount offered is withdrawn or is no longer available to the Customers;
  • to immediately remove all Seniors Card promotional materials and logos from display and advertising materials, when the Business' registration with, or participation in, the Program ceases;
  • to promptly contact the Department, and in any event within five days, of the Business deciding to withdraw from the Program;
  • that the registration, and participation of the Business in the Program does not constitute any endorsement whatsoever of either, or both, the Business; or
  • the products and services provided by the Business, by the Department; and
  • that the Department may immediately withdraw the registration and participation of the Business in the Program if the Business fails to comply with any one or more of the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

In registering with the Program, the Business acknowledges and agrees that:

  • the Department can refuse, entirely at its discretion, to admit an applicant business to participate in the Program; and
  • the Department will advise Customers to take any unresolved issues between the Customer and a registered Business to Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading.
Can I extend my discount offer to interstate and overseas visitors?

Interstate Seniors Card holders

The Seniors Card Program operates in each State and Territory and most businesses offer their discounts to all Seniors Card holders in Australia. The online Application Form gives you the choice of making your offer available to interstate Seniors Card holders or restricting it to Tasmanian Seniors Card holders.

New Zealand SuperGold Card

As a valued Business Partner offering discounts to Tasmanian Seniors Card holders, you can now increase your customers by extending your discount to NZ SuperGold Card holders while they are visiting Australia.

In New Zealand, participating businesses offer their discounts to visiting Tasmanian Seniors Card holders.

Please note that it is your choice whether to extend the discount to NZ SuperGold Card holders. As there is no promotional material for your business to display, it is up to the New Zealand Card holder to ask about a discount or present their card.

If you are already a registered Business Partner and you have not notified us that you are interested in extending your offer to NZ SuperGold Card holders please email us at seniors@dpac.tas.gov.au or phone on 1800 009 501.

If you are about to register online as a new Business Partner you will be given the choice of making your offer available to NZ SuperGold Card holders or restricting the discount to Tasmanian Seniors Card holders.

How will customers know where to find my business?

All participating Business Partners are listed in the online directory. They are also listed on the Seniors Tasmania Facebook page.

How do I remove my business from the Seniors Card Program?

You can close your account via your online Business Partner account or contact the Tasmanian Seniors Card Program on 1800 009 501.

FAQs for login and accounts

What does the verify email do?

When you click the verify email button the system will send a onetime password (OTP) to your email address which you will need to enter the box on the screen to proceed.

What if I don’t get the One Time Password (OTP) email?

Check your email account including any junk folders.

Try resending the OTP request.

If you can’t find the email, click Cancel and check you have entered your email address correctly. If you still don’t have any success, you can either:

  • download and complete the online application form
  • go to a Service Tasmania shop and a staff member can do the application on your behalf.
Why are all the fields grey on the online form and I can’t enter anything?

You will need to enter and validate your email address to be able to complete the online form.

Why do I get an error message when I enter my date of birth or phone number?

The system won’t let you enter a date of birth for a person less than 60 years old or older than 120 years.

You can only enter a valid Tasmanian number starting with the area code 03 or a mobile number.

Why doesn’t the system come up with a match when I am entering my address?

The system only accepts valid Tasmanian residential addresses recognised by Australia Post.

  • Enter more of your address in the same format of the addresses listed.
  • If your address starts with unit number or floor level number start by entering the street number and address and the known address should appear in the list.
  • If the system does not accept your address you should download, complete and post your application to Tasmanian Seniors Card Program GPO Box 65, Hobart 7001 or email your application to seniors@dpac.tas.gov.au
The data entry box has a red border, what does this mean?

Red borders mean there is a problem with what you have entered (a blank date of birth or too many digits in the phone number, for example).

Why does the Next button have a red border?

If there is a problem with what has been entered, then the system won’t let you proceed to the next page or submit the application.

  • Fields with a * are mandatory and need to be completed.
  • There are also fields in the form that must conform to a rule i.e., DOB 60 years or older.
  • Hover over the Next/Submit button to see what errors are.
How do I upload my digital identity documents?

The easiest way to provide your proof of identity is to use a smart phone. When you select Choose File(s) the smart phone should give you one of the following options:

  • take a photo
  • choose a photo from your photo library
  • choose a file.
Why can’t I login to my online self-service account?

Check you are using the right email address and password. If you do not remember your password, select the forgot my password (Get Help) option on the login screen. If your online self-service account exists you will be sent an email with a link to reset your password.

If the system does not allow you to reset your password, it is likely your online self-service account may not be active so you will need to activate your account here or visit Service Tasmania where they will enter your email address, prompting the system will send you an email to reset your password and activate your account.

Why doesn't the system work on my device?

If you are unsuccessful using the Seniors Card on your device your options are to:

  • Visit Service Tasmania and they can put in an application, change your details, request a replacement card or deactivate a card on your behalf.
  • Call Service Tasmania on 1300 135 513 who can change your details, request a replacement card or deactivate a card on your behalf.
